Description:

The CEPR Research and Policy Network on Household Finance and the Study Center Gerzensee are organising the 2026 CEPR European Conference on Household Finance. The objective is to present state-of-the-art empirical and theoretical research on household financial behaviour and on how it is influenced by government policies and the economic environment. The two-day conference will take place on 8-9 October 2026 at the Study Center Gerzensee.

In addition, a CEPR Research-Policy-Practice event will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2026 at the Swiss National Bank in Bern. The event will focus on “Economic Policy and Household Finance: Insights from Financial Transaction Data”, with a keynote address by Alvaro Ortiz (BBVA Research and CEPR) and a panel discussion featuring distinguished speakers from central banks, financial institutions and service providers as well as academia.

We solicit papers in the following areas, but other related areas may also be considered:

  • Patterns of asset allocation and debt behaviour over the life cycle
  • Financing retirement and the demographic transition
  • Consumer indebtedness, financial distress and default decisions
  • Behavioural approaches to household finances
  • Financial literacy and financial education programmes
  • Trust, subjective expectations, pessimism, and financial decisions
  • International comparisons of household finances using micro-data
  • Cognitive and genetic studies on individual financial performance
  • Financial advice and legal protection of investors and borrowers
  • The impact of technology on household financial behaviour

The organisers particularly encourage submissions from PhD students in household finance planning to go on the job market in Winter 2026. Students must apply online stating that they are a PhD student and supply their CV. Top submissions, written exclusively by students, will be included in the regular conference programme and considered for the best student paper prize, awarded by the CEPR Research and Policy Network on Household Finance. Past awardees have launched highly promising careers, including assistant professor positions in top academic institutions globally.

Submission:

The submission fee for each paper is 50 euro and proceeds will contribute to covering organisational costs borne by the CEPR RPN. The submission fee is waived only if the author and all co-authors are PhD students. Full instructions on the submission process can be found below.
