Description:
Mutual financial institutions play an important role in economic systems. Mutual financial activities are provided by many institutions, such as cooperative banks, building societies, credit unions, and savings banks. These institutions have advantages and disadvantages compared to commercial and investment banks. On the one hand, mutual financial institutions are strongly linked to the local economy and have different governance based on member involvement and stakeholder orientation, which provides them with more (soft) information about borrowers. On the other hand, the consolidation process in credit markets makes it difficult for small businesses to survive in an increasingly competitive environment. Technological advances (from FinTech to digital-only banks), higher interest rates, energy price shocks, and new regulatory and supervisory reforms have created new challenges. The workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for academics, policy-makers, and practitioners to discuss the outlook for the industry at a high level. We welcome papers on the broad topic of mutual financial institutions and activities.
